Promoting norm compliance: a checklist

Abstract:
I develop and test interventions to promote resource conservation, voting, charitable donations, antibiotic adherence, or online content creation.  In doing so, I think of such behaviors as largely driven by norm compliance.  When the desired behavior is already a norm, I use a simple, three-item 'checklist' to ensure that I've maximally encouraged people to abide by norms: increase observability, eliminate excuses, and communicate expectations.  If there is time, I'll also discuss some things norm compliance teaches us for situations when a new norm must be established, namely, that the new norm must be categorical and established publicly.
