I am a philosopher! My research primarily uses agent-based and formal models to study questions in the philosophy of science and in social and political philosophy. I focus on two areas. The first is social epistemology, the study of how people can best pursue truth and knowledge through, or despite, other people and the social norms, practices, and institutions that shape inquiry. I study these questions in the context of scientific and political communities, with current research examining the effects of epistemically detrimental dissent within such communities, and how it can best be mitigated. The second area examines questions of human behavior, cooperation, and social norms, drawing on research in biology, political science, and economics to do so. My current work investigates the role of transfer learning in the emergence of cooperation and the maintenance of social norms, and the implications of these findings for the design of social and political institutions.
